Anyone familiar with Cellular Ones Wireless Internet service. Or any other wireless company.

Speeds offered are 384?, 512, and 1.2 $49-$129

A few questions.......

How dependable is wireless?

What kind of speed do you "really" get?

Would you still need a router for multiple computers?

Could you surf with a laptop poolside or in the car at the mall while the wife shops?

Thx

First of all what type (Brand, Frequence, etc) of equipment does Cell One use for there wireless?

In my area (in central MN) the company that has wireless uses Breezecom BreezeNET equipment and you can get about 512-768 KBps (~ 3 T1's) with no limit on bandwidth. At least that is what the company claims (I personally don't have there wireless, yet). They offer roaming throught-out there network with the use of a car antenna. The Breezecom BreezeNET equipment uses the 2.4 Ghz FHSS (line of site required), which is Breezecom's 3Mbps solution.

Another Wireless ISP (not yet in my area) uses the 2.4 Ghz DSSS (line of site also required), an 11Mbps solution. They offer speeds of 256K and 512K.

The only difference I have seen is that the DSSS (11Mbps) equipment is cheaper that the FHSS (3Mbps). Mainly because the DSSS (11Mbps) is industry standard for wireless now.
A thrid Wireless ISP in MN uses a non-line of site solution using a 900 Mhz Spectrum. They offer something like 128K, I think - not really sure.

All three Wireless ISP's are very dependable as far as always having a connection.

For use on multiple computers I do know that both of the 2.4 Ghz solutions have equipment that allow this in different ways.
For the Breezecom you would need a BreezeNET SA-10D or SA-40D station adapter, not sure how those work with a router because the plug directly in the to computer via a NIC.

For the DSSS 2.4 solution I know that Lucent (WaveLan, ORINOCO - sp??) has a Residential Home Gateway (I think it works like a router but not really sure, I haven't looked in to that peice of equipment yet).

Hope this help.

The future of wireless is coming, trust me. I work for a major satellite communications company in Canada, and in development is wireless internet that you can use while driving up to 60 (I think) MPH travelling down the highway. Its been tested and worked, they're just in the final testing stages. The only problem is that you can only have a small number of people per major reciever, and it slows down the more people on. For a while it will be restricted to rich businessman...

but its a giant leap forward in the right direction.
