I'm currently using 56k dialup to connect my desktop computer to the Internet, however my sister is wanting to get a laptop along with "wireless internet" (she talked to some woman at dixons), is she on about satiellete connection or what? are there any other alternatives? ..maybe she assumed I had wireless router for broadband?

I think the woman at Dixons meant the laptop had some form of wireless connectivity to allow it to access a wireless router and thus the internet connection.

You must have a wireless service provider and be within their range in order to use your built in Wi-Fi capability.

There are some regions and communities in the USA that are now establishing wide area wireless connection areas. The big providers like Comcast,Cox, etc., are vigorously opposing these entrepreneurial efforts.

Think in terms of cell phone areas. I can get wireless service anywhere in the USA from my Sprint PCS phone linked to my laptop as long as I am in a Sprint PCS cell area.
