Wireless internet speeds 1/10th of what they should be

When I plug my laptop into my router I get about 7mbps, however when run wirelessly literally 2 ft. from the router--I got less than 1mbps.

I've tried adjusting the channels, using g-mode only, and my router (linksys WRT54G2) is running the latest firmware.

Any tips?

Check the usual suspects, interference from baby monitors, wireless security systems, other nearby AP, cordless telephones, microwaves, all of them run the same frequency. Many times the only solution is to move to the 5ghz spectrum

The router is set connect at 1mbs. Change it.

If you do have interference issues, you can use foreign networking equipment which allows channels 12,13,14. You can probably flash US bought products with foreign firmware, but I don't believe that is legal with the FCC.

The transmission rate is set at "auto"..which I've modified to 11mbps and 54mbps which still results in a slow speed..

Two feet is too close, move it farther away. Also that sounds like typical interference which is about impossible to overcome these days unless you live in the middle of nowhere. Also make sure you aren't "pointing" the antennas at each other.
