Just got a d-link di-624 802.11g 108mbps router and wasnt expecting much. I copied the counterstrike 1.5 executable which is 121MB from one computer to another using wireless and it took 1 min and 5 secs. here is a screenshot of what i get in sisoft sandra. it ranges from 4mb - 8mb

anyways, if you are thinking of getting a wireless router go get it cause its fun stuff

you know what...i am gonna try that...i'll post an update in awhile

speaking of wireless networking. Is 802.11a stuff any good? I saw some of the 54mbps 5ghz 802.11a and was wondering how ood it was compared to g. Since its 5ghz wouldn it be better?

121MB = 968mb
1min 5 sec = 65 secs

968mb/65sec = 14.9mb/sec
which seems right for 802.11g (54mb/sec being theoretical)
benchmark is off?

probably is off since i am not near the router; the router is downstairs and i am upstairs. i used to run a 100ft cat 5 cable up here. I would say i am around 50ft away through the walls and ceiling and stuff. ohhh...also that same file copied in 15 secs with cat 5. and with 128bit wep the file took 1 min and 15 secs.

802.11g is theoretical 54mbps, but real-world you'll probably get about 20-24

D-Link stuff "turbo's" it to make it "twice as fast" (ie 108mbps) but it will still only get about 30ish mbps.

Confused

Much shorter range, about 50ft or less. No backwards compatibility with other 802.11 standards.

Should be added that it works only with D-link equipment optimized for "turbo" mode. Both, your roputer and a NIC must be D-Link "turbo" devices.

With these wireless routers, when you actually plug into the ports in the back, do you get the rated 100mbps transfers like non-wireless routers ?

It's the only reason I've kept from switching since my whole house is wired anyway. It'd still be nice not to have to plug it in everytime.
