Wireless Internet issues

I just got a compaq R3000Z laptop. It has a broadcom 11g internal wireless card. I have a NETGEAR 814 Wireless router (in the basement) with two desktops connected. One of the desktop is connected directly and the other through the MA101 USB adapter. Both are working fine. I could not get any signal in the Compaq laptop with Broadcom card. I attached the MA101 wireless USB adapter to the USB port of the laptop and could get connected (even in my backyard).
I played around and now I see that the broadcom (internal) card of the laptop gets strong signal but I cannot open any pages through Internet Explorer. Can you gurus please help.
I have Verizon DSL and had to tune the MTU to get to Yahoo mail - if this helps. I have checked under "my compuetr" and the Wireless card (Broadcom) is working fine and is enabled.

Need your help please.

Thanks
Sanjay

OK guys since no one replied. This is what I did.
1. At MS DOS prompt typed "ipconfig"
2. The Gateway address was showing as 192.168.1.0
3. The router was set to 192.168.0.1
4. set the PC to a static IP 192.168.0.2
5. Set up the DNS etc.

Can connect now.

Are you using wep? If so, did you make sure to type it in?
If there is a local area connection, and you double click on it,then click support, does your ip start with 169 or something else? click on details, do you see anything listed under DNS servers?
