Wireless internet connection sharing?

Deeko

Lifer
Alright, we got DSL in our place. My roommate and I both have wireless cards in our computers....the DSL modem is currently connected to my computer via ethernet....is there a way for me to set up a wireless network so that he can share my connection? If I don't have to buy a wireless router, I don't want to.

What Operating Systems are you using? If I'm not mistaken, you can use the 2 wireless NICs in ad-hoc mode and share the connection. If you're using Windows XP, you can use the computer with the connection as a sort of DHCP server to make the setup easier. Other thoughts?

Yes. I have enabled an ad-hoc network between the two, and I have my internet connect set as shared. The computers are seeing each other fine on the network, and clearly my internet works, on my roommate's computer it says internet connection on DJDEEKO under internet gateway but it won't connect!

I've tried setting it up to automatically get an IP, i tried setting it to 192.168.0.1, and various other similar ones, someone told me to try 10.0.0.1, that didn't work either.

ICS seems to be a problem with Wireless Ad-Hoc.

Some people had better luck using Analog Proxy NAT software instead of ICS.

Keeping your computer on while your friend is surfing will cost in additional electrical expense, and will ware off your computer. So I am sure you have a very good reason to go through this process in order to save $29 and have a "Klutzy" system.

My computer is always on.

I'd recommend a cheap router....you can get mr814's for $25 after rebates (I think it's still working, check hot deals).
