Wireless Internet and Bad Router Question

I have a Netgear router that I have had for a few years. It has always worked well and I usually get 5mbit speeds on my laptop with it when i connect to my 12 mbit network (its a B router so I believe that was the max I could get anyways) Today my internet is working fine on my desktop but I could not for the life of me connect to the wifi using my laptop. I reset the router, reflashed latest firmware. Unplugged and reset, tried WEP and non-WEP. No luck. Now I can connect to it only if im close to the router and even with 5 connection bars im getting 2mbit or under at the most. I believe from all this that the router is failing but just want to make sure before I buy a new one. Thanks
