Wireless Integration for New Home

Presently I am living in a townhouse where I run a 8 port switch/router going to a 4 port switch all cat5.

I will be moving into a new house I purchased in 10 days. The main point where my servers and desktops will be is an office. From there I would like to connect both my living room and upstairs rooms wirelessly as stringing cat across wood floors or ceilings is not an option that is not extremely tacky in my case. I am interested in the SRX products by Linksys and would like to keep consistant with that brand as my cable modem, router and switch are all linksys. Cable modem connects to the router, the switch comes off of one of the ports. What I would like to do is string off an access point off of that router and another in the living room to connect my PS2, Xbox and upstairs a laptop which would use a wireless-g pcmcia card (LINKSYS WPC54GX).

Strolling over to NewEgg I see two options. The Linksys WRT54GX2 and the WAP54GX. Viewing the price difference I do not see any reason not to just get to WRT54GX2 and the pcmcia card. With SRX and MIMO is it possible to interconnect these two routers just as you would with any normal routers and run from a port off of my main router hosting the devices in my office?

Any alternative recommendations?

I just set up a network for a co-worker with two Buffalo routers in WDS repeater mode. His house was big and all thick concrete so not even a single MIMO router could give any real coverage improvement. Also remember that MIMO requires all MIMO compatible hardware which will be very expensive for all your systems.

The first question is how big is the house and how thick are the walls (do cell phones of cordless phones work dropout the house).
You should buy an SRX400 if you prefer Linksys as well as a regular G just to see if MIMO gives you any additional coverage over a regular router.

You can route the wireless router off your wired router you just need to disable DHCP and set the router IP address in the DHCP range of your wired router.
If you can run some cables, you can have several wireless routers running from your hub, maybe one for each floor or one for each section of the house.

You may have many options, but there is no way to tell until we know how far the signal travels in your house. A regular G router may give you enough coverage or MIMO might not be enough in which case you will need to run a network with multiple access points or repeaters.

I believe the main question would be can two WRT54GX2 communicate with each other wirelessly?

It shouldn't be too expensive as the only wireless card I would purchase would be the pcmcia card.

I do not believe WRT54GX2 can be bridged and I know it cannot act as a repeater to extend the wireless signal. I don't think even the SRX access point can be configured as a repeater as I could not find any info in the documentation.

The WRT54G(S) can be flashed with aftermarket firmware to support WDS. There is also a Linksys wireless range extender which will extend the range of signal but it is not MIMO so you will not benefit from SRX.
