Wireless inconsistent ping and drop outs

Hey guys,

So I have been having issues for over a year now with my wireless setup. I have changed wireless adapters and wireless routers and get the same end result.

Originally I had a Belkin N1 wireless router model: f5d8231-4
I also had a Xtreme N Desktop PCI Adapter DWA-552

When I was getting a pretty weak and inconsistent signal I setup and used a Linksys WRT54GS, ran dd-wrt on it and used it as an extender.

The issue even with this setup was that the ping would be very inconsistent going from 20ms and spiking up to 1000+.

I hoped the issue had to due with using a repeater and/or overall poor reception.

I then switched to an Asus AC55U router and an Asus PCE-AC68 adapter in hopes that switching to AC might get me a channel that had fewer interference.

That brings me to today. I still have the exact same ping spikes. I can not run net stumbler as my wireless card is not supported.

If I ping my router the response time is always 2ms or less.

If I ping www.google.com It will almost always ping at 25-27ms. It had occasionally timed out.

If I ping my modem sometimes it will ping at 2-3ms consistently while other times it will show time out errors or will start sowing jumps up to 200+

I have not really had to troubleshoot a network before with anything that takes more than a reset or new hardware so I'm a bit clueless where to take it from here.

Do you experience the same high pings on a wired connection? You can use a tool like PingPlotter to see if you are having any problems with your ISP. It does a traceroute at set intervals and then graphs the ping on each hop for you to visualize. Here's the link (the free version is at the bottom of the downloads page): http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html

The default trace interval in PingPlotter is like 15 seconds, change that to like 2.5 seconds for a better visualization.

What is the best way to capture the data so that I can upload it here?

Maybe ping isn't my issue maybe it's packet loss.

What is the distance and "terrain" between the Wireless source and the Client.

Did you try a wired computer connected directly to the Router?

😎

If by distance you mean straight line distance well then 30 ft length and 6 ft height. I'm not sure about width, I would say 3-6 feet width. I'll go ahead and ignore that for now. That gives you about 31 feet length, straight line from my router to the wireless adapter.

I also have tried N and AC on this router adapter combo and get the same results. I only get "2 bars" with AC but faster speed. I get 4-5 bars with N.

Below I have listed two links to testing with the same program on a computer that has a direct lan connection to the ASUS router. Ping only got as high as 30 (compared to 608 of my computer) but it had packet loss in the same ways that my computer did.

Another try from my wireless desktop gets this which has a far worse packet loss than before

http://gyazo.com/596599bf7ddb00481e5e53a0cef1a4b7

Includes packet loss at the router which was not present earlier

I'm getting packet loss on hops 1-9 at any one point in time. Sometimes a few of them sometimes all of them.

You're getting times as high as 476 just to your wireless router. That should not ever happen and would seem to agree with previous comments that you are most likely seeing wireless interference from other wireless signals in the area. Have you tried changing the channel on the wireless router yet? If not, do so (use channel 1, 6 or 11) and then run this test again.

Or someone else is using your wireless, and running torrents.

I think your spot on. I have tried this previously and didn't seem to notice much different but this time it had a much better result. I had it on auto when I posted those timings and I figured (incorrectly) that the router was smart and would choose the best channel. Apparently not. I set it to channel 36 and got the occasional time out and occasional ping spikes. I set it to channel 149 and got conditions that were even worse than the ones I posted. I switched it to channel 165 and seem to be getting very little if any ping spikes and the very very occasional timeout.

I believe the issue is that the misses insisted we have the at&T wireless uverse receiver which uses its own router and wireless signal. I already checked and there is no hookup for a cable even though we have one in that room. I wonder if it's possible to have the asus router send information to the atnt receiver so that I can turn the atnt router off. I had previously switched the atnt router to minimum power and placing it as far away as my cable would let me. It's in a "hidden" location so I had completely forgotten about it. Thanks for the help I'll report back in a couple days or weeks if I get atnt router turned off or can just send it back and get a regular receiver and see if there is anymore improvement.

I also sent out an order last night for some high gain antennas. I'm assuming with interference a signal can no't just "overcome" another signal. That a high strength signal will still see interference from the other signal?

i would still try JackMDS's suggestion, just to make sure the problem doesn't exist in the non-wireless world.

this paragraph is a little confusing. What att sent you is a modem/ router/ switch/ wireless accesspoint all in one combo unit.

They used to allow you to disable everything except the modem part. I don't believe there is any easy way to do this anymore (although there are different tricks you can do to bypass the router part as much as possible). You can still disable the wireless portion on most of their units. In my 2wire uverse router I goto the html setup page go:

Lan -> wireless -> interface: disabled.

Once you have that disabled you can plug your choice of wireless access point or wireless router into any of the LAN ports on the att router (if you use a wireless router there is some extra setup that might not be documented, but people on these forums can guide you)

Get a new modem. Those combo units are crap! Make sure it's just a modem and not a router.

As far as w WIFI software instead of Netstumbler try Inssider.

ATnT gave us a modem and a WAP that plugs into the modem. The WAP is so that the wireless reciever can recieve cable..wirelessly. There doesn't seem to be any way to turn this off and have wireless go through my own router to the wireless reciever. I believe (could be wrong) they lock you into using thier device which means I can't get completely rid of the interferring signal.

I'll try it on hard line as well and see what my report says.

I assume you're referring to television programming, as far i know ATT doesn't touch coaxial cable (usually what cable refers to).
Can you post model numbers for your modem and WAP?

I dont know if I can help here, I haven't had much experience with ATT uverse television, maybe someone else can help. I have seen people generally complain about latency when they also have the tv services from ATT.

edit: oh, also post model of the ATT television reciever.
