Okay I want to set up a Wireless home Network...Now there a dozen or so setups that i can buy...what is like the best...

Linksys, aironet (Cisco), 3Com, Intel, D-Link, SMC, and there are others...

I am going to use it to surf the net around the house for the most part...

Thanks in advance guys!!!

Well, 3COM and Intel are probably the best, however, a Linksys product will work great and be quite a bit cheaper. NetGear is good also !

Is there a big difference in brands...?

And if i buy a linksys access point, can I use it with a 3Com PC Card?

Thanks again guys?

As long as they all use the IEEE 802.11b standard you can cross brands with no problem

SMC has the best range of the affordable equipment.

Cheers!

What is the difference in the range of the SMC and the Linksys...100's of feet or like 10 feet?

Those wireless access point gateway routers are cool. I wonder if they build one with a built in cable modem. Sure would be nice to get rid of the rental.

I know some have better range than others. I think the Lucent one had a range of 500ft, but it was around $500 about a year ago. Don't know if distance matters or not.

Hi,

You might take a look at http://www.practicallynetworked.com/. I believe they tested the wireless routers from both SMC and Linksys recently. I believe they have identical internals -- except for the fact that the SMC includes a print server. You should be able to find information and even reviews on just about anything that's been discussed in this thread so far. Might help you make up your mind.

Regards,
Jim

Roger,

You're welcome. I hope you enjoy that site. There's a lot of useful how-to stuff as well as the reviews.
