I installed a wireless router.

I need to understand how to add laptops, keeping my system secure.

I have a laptop from work, and would like to be able to work form a hot spot, then go home and be able to link in to my system, without reseting my home PCs in other rooms.

I have a Motorola, router, and the handbook is pretty slim on the how to, and troubleshooting.

Is there a general purpose primer out there ?

I am pretty tech savy, but have not been able to break this one down so I can understand the how tos.

You have a Router and Wireless AP? Or a combo unit?

List model number of unit(s), and number of wired & wireless devices you want to attach.

Thx!

Use WPA for a better securty WEP is a NO NO
disable SSID broadcasting
MAC Filter

Hotspots are wide-open you will need firewall software like heavyset ZoneAlarm or freeware like Sygate Personal Firewall. Also make sure you have Anti-Virus like Norton or McAfee or freeware like Anti-Vir.
If you want more information go to Network forum.

It is a Motorola WR-850

My laptop is a Dell w/wireless card.

My wife's laptop is a HP w/builtin g connectivity.

I had ours working, but at my brotherin law's house, I could not access his wireless system. He granted me access, but still no luck.
