are there any wireless g usb adapters that doesn't require any 3rd party drivers? in other words, microsoft automatically installs its own drivers once it is plugged in.

When XP was introduces there was No consumers Wireless market.

When SP2 came out Microsoft was out of the Microsoft is out of the Wireless Hardware business.

In general, take also into consideration chipset of many Wireless hardware devices change as fast as changing underwear. The devices might be called with the same name (DYS model XZV123) but the drivers are not always the same.

Each chipset has generic chipset drivers but the Brand change them to fit their perception of what they need to dish us.

Drivers that are included with the release of Windows are either general uniform drivers (Which Wireless USB are not) or drivers that were submitted to Microsoft to add to the Windows CD, and are WHQL. A process that takes time and effort, a trait that the manufactures of Wireless hardware do not have.

thanks for the great info jackmds. last time i used a linksys product, it required installing the linksys program; i did not really like the user interface. i just want to keep it simple. any other manufacturers besides the usual linksys, netgear, dlink, which all require the use of a propreitary software?

It varies, sometimes you can install the drivers by it self, some times it must be done through the manufacturer utility.

However, most of the newer Wireless cards, after the initial installation, would work with Windows Zero Configuration (WZC).

Important, you can use either WZC or the original utility but Not both.
