Does any one have a suggestion on a good wireless g router to get. I have been looking at a few particularly the Linksys WRT54G and am surprised to see on Cnet that there are allot of bad reviews for this model. I will only be running a desktop PC and a Mac G3 and would like any opinions as to a good reliable wireless router. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Welcome to the Network Forum.

Quote: "am surprised to see on Cnet that there are allot of bad reviews for this model"

When it comes to Entry Level I never saw an Item that does not get Negative, and many times Horrible Reviews. (The Lucent Orinoco Gold is may be the one exception).

Why?

Objectively!

The prices are so low that it is hard to believe that any of the Big players is making big money from selling them.

As a result the QA is really bad, a lot of time the variations between units of the same brand are bigger than the variation between bran.

Subjectively!

The marketing ploys are bordering with deception. People buy and get upset when it does not meet their expectations.

Most people are so ignorant about Network issues that they Sc*** Up even simple installations, and then blame the Hardware.

So what to do? First look here:

Link: 802.11a/b/g SOHO Routers & Access Points: Performance

The differences between the first set of graphs to the second represent the performance differences between 802.11b to 802.11g. It might give you a good idea about indoor's distance coverage. Your actual distance might be different. Indoor coverage depends heavily on the envioroment; graphs like this should be used to understand the relation in performance between Wireless hardware. .

And then buy the best value for the price that you can get. Try the Hardware immediately and return if it does not meet your expectations.

Well, I have a Netgear WGR614. I bought it because of great reviews. And it does work great ...... as long as you don't use the wireless function and connect with a wire or the router is no more than 12 feet from the receiver.

My original setup had the router about 22ft away with a separating wall in between. I had to mount the router on the connecting wall about 6 feet up (bringing the distance to about 12 ft) in order to get a signal strong enough to work.

It would have been easier and cheaper to drill a hole and run a wire. Netgear's tech support told me to turn off all cordless phones, microwaves and satellite tv systems in order to get it to work also.
