Wireless Disconnects then Connects to Neighbor's Router

I set up a new Linksys WRT54G router and MSI wireless PCI card in a desktop machine. The wireless in the desktop machine sometimes disconnects and then connects to a neighbor's unsecured Linksys router. I configured mine for WPA2 Personal and AES encryption. Why would the MSI wireless NIC decide to disconnect from my own router and go connect to another?

Because your computer wifi card is set up to scan for available networks and if it finds an unsecured network signal that's strong enough it will just connect to it. The nic should have some software that sets up how it operates. You should be able to set it up so as not to scan but just to connect to your own secured wireless connection. I'd tell you how I do it, except I almost never use wireless, but it should be pretty straightforward. Or if you still have trouble I'm sure you could get help from someone more knowledgeable than myself

If you look in your wireless network settings.. there is a lil box that you can imput your favorite networks... ensure that only yours is listed and the computer will not reconnect to the neighbors if it's signal drops the connection.

If your PCI Antenna is between the tower and th wall you should think of getting an external Antenna with few feet of coax so it can be placed above the system.

If your connection would be better (with stronger signal) your Wireless card would not look for new relations. 😉
