Wireless dekstop adapter

If I were to have a wireless desktop computer (don't worry... it's an old secondary PC), do I have to have the same brand PCI card and router? As in, do I need a D-link PCI card and a D-link router, or a Linksys PCI card and a D-link router? Will they both work?

Also... will the wireless range to my old PC upstairs get a decent signal, even though it's upstairs? There are no walls blocking it (except the celing 😛)...

No, you don't need the same brands.

It ddepends on the strength of the router, what's in the ceiling, and other interference.

I've gotten decent signal with decent soho equipment two floors below the wireless access point. Except when the phone rang...
