Wireless connection takes longer to "wake up" on resume in Vista than XP

Like most notebook users, I rarely shut down my laptop. Instead, I just close the lid to suspend and open it to resume my last session. On my previous laptop, which had Windows XP, the wireless connection resumed pretty much instantly. On my new laptop, which has Vista, it takes much longer to resume - probably close to ten seconds. While I can't be certain that the difference is attributable to the OS, the laptops are very similar in terms of hardware and have the same wireless card. (The newer laptop, the Dell 640m, is just an updated version of the old one, the 630m).

As far as problems go, I guess this is a fairly minor one. But it would be nice if I didn't have to wait ten seconds to be able to use my laptop every time I opened the lid. I'd love to know if there's a workaround.

(I posted this topic this morning on the networking forum, but I thought this may be a better place to put it.)

10 seconds is nothing. That can be due to security checks being made on "wake up."

I don't know that "most" laptop users do that. I am on my 6th since 1995 and have never done it. When I stop using it I power down then close the lid. My option for lid closing is simply to turn the monitor off - I have never trusted standby or hibernation.

Mioay be this would be a decent poll question - what do you choose when you close the lid? :)

I find that my wireless connection takes a few seconds to reconnect after coming out of hibernation or standby; I'm using Windows XP Pro.

As for what I do when I close the lid - it's set to do nothing. And I wouldn't close the lid on my laptop while it is on, as the keyboard is a way for air to be pulled into my system to cool it.

Eep - 13,036 posts!

I didn't realize that so many people preferred to shutdown instead of standby or hibernate. The first laptop I owned went to suspend when the lid was closed, so that's what I have been doing for eight years. As for ten seconds not being very long - I guess that's sort of reassuring. It just doesn't seem normal to me because the laptops I previously I owned didn't have the delay.

As I said, as problems go it's a minor one. But if there is a way to speed up the process, I'd certainly take advantage.

Turn off the security procedures or perhaps lower them a notch.

As for doing nothing when closing the lid, for a short time that is OK, but for a longer time, having the LCD on creates more heat with the ventilation through the keyboard blocked. That is not a good idea - it also uses finite time from the LCD's life.
