Wireless connection on and off!

I've had this problem for awhile now. Like, I click on a link, but then it says page cannot be found. When I refresh it, then it works. I guess my wireless router's on and off sometimes

Lately, I've found that while playing Counterstrike and Counterstrike Source, i've hit ping times of 500+, so this is a major setback, i've forwarded its ports already

When I plugged it in through the wired ports, it works fine.

I'm using a Netgear WGT624 v3

Make sure it's setup to only connect to your specified network and not any non secure networks. If all else fails run a cable and don't complain. Wireless is not mean't to replace a good wired network.

Yes, your computer may be trying to connect to other networks.

I think "trying to connect" is the wrong term. Your card may be doing a probe request, trying to find available networks. this shouldn't normally affect normal network operations though, so I don't think it's that.

dang....when what's wrong? Still geting super high pings on certain games. This has only been happening in the past couple months too. I haven't done anything to the router, so I don't know what's happening. Is it just crapping out?

start 2 continuous pings (ping -t www.google.com) one to google, and one to your router. See if you see any spikes in both. If you see a spike in the ping times to the router, you likely have an interference issue, such as a 2.4 Ghz phone scanning/jumping channels, etc. If you only see spikes to google, then it may be your ISP (is this shared cable?)

If you have interference issues, I would turn off all security, change to channel 1, 6, or 11, and test again. Once you find a good channel, then layer your security back on bit by bit until it starts choking, or you are back at your secured settings.

i don't know if this is considered spiking, but the results vary like this:
Google: Usually runs about 30-50 ms but occasionally goes to like 104
Router: Usually goes from 2-20 ms but occasionally goes to 60-70

Is this considered spiking?

Simply put - you are dealing with interferrence and the nature of wireless. That's the way it is. nmweaver has it nailed.

It's just the way wireless works.

Make sure your wireless AP is on the top floor of your house, and as close to the center of the house as possible. It made a world of difference for me. Never get disconnects like you described anymore.
