Wireless charging inefficiencies

my asus zenfone 2 has quickCharge v2. from dead to almost 80% charged in 1hr. maybe 100% in 1.5 hrs, but im not that patient to wait.
so yeah, i rather take fast over wireless charging any time!
 
That's a dumb counter. It's not about one or the other.

I use a pad at night. I just place it there, and my phone's charging. It's always going to be easier than plugging a cable in.

QC is great for on the go. Wireless is stupidly convenient at work, at night, basically any time you know you won't be moving your phone around a lot. It's not a question of one or the other, as you can usually have both at the same time.

So just ask yourself if an extra dollar a year is worth the convenience or not.
 
The numbers we're talking about here are so tiny the efficiency discussion is utterly pointless. It costs like $1 to charge a modern cell phone daily for a year. So maybe you spend $2-3 doing it wirelessly. You would never, ever notice that on a power bill.

Multiply that by all the devices and you can see that it would make a difference. It's not always about the individual.
 
I'm not worried about my electric bill, wireless charging just isn't for everyone. Unless it comes with my device I'll probably never have it, I can usually reach over and plug my phone in, it's not that difficult. Plus I have enough USB cables at work, in my car, etc.

I also don't want one sitting on my desk, I have enough junk. I also sometimes use my phone with the cable plugged in, I can't see holding a wireless charger up to my ear.

But if it works for you more power to you, I don't see it as a big necessity right now.

Love the convenience at work. The phone comes on/off the pad all day and needs constant charge as I use wifi tethering plus calling 9 hours a day.

You must hate electric toothbrushes and other common items that use wireless charging.

Like others have said, the energy lost is trivial. Your TV/Xbox/STB in standby consume more power in a day, much less any large appliance.

Worrying about this is like sweating that a window is open on the Titanic.

As a parent of a baby, wireless charging has been an unexpected plus. Beyond not having to fiddle around with a cable initially, I can grab my phone the couple times a night the baby gets up and just drop it back down in the pitch dark afterwards.

No its not a deal breaker, but there are a lot of smartphone features will less utility to me.
 
I love wireless charging! It seems like the USB port always eventually loosens / breaks / wears out somehow so wireless reduces the frequency of plugging and un-plugging the charging / data cable. It also prevents breaking the usb cable connector when accidentally knocking the phone off the night stand in the morning snoozing / turning off the alarm... I've broken far too many usb cables in this fashion... 🙁
 
Wireless charging is neat, but for me it's just not that big of a deal yet. The lack of wireless charging did nothing to prevent me from ordering a Nexus 6P.

When fast wireless charging becomes the norm and the chargers are cheap to buy, then I'll probably jump aboard.

Annnnd, I looked at the article.

It's about a startup using lasers as a wireless power transmission source, and they are wildly inefficient! (Like 65% energy waste.)

Obviously, so are the current inductive chargers!
 
Wireless charging in concept is awesome - it's still lacking a company to really think it through on the implementation.
 
I really hope that company Wiitricity ithink they are called, finally introduces TRUE wireless eletricity.

QI is just a stepping stone.

Small charge targets mainly. Ideally I would like a mat of whatever size you want and just toss it on there and it charges. Think you could have a night stand with the charging pad laid under veneer that took up the entire top surface or something.
