My dad has a REALLY REALLY OLD laptop that he wants to get running on our network I set up at home.
That said,
He's running Windows 95, and the wireless card he just bought requires 98 SE as a minimum.

Are there any cards that will run on 95? And if so, are there any that are better than others?

He won't need speeds higher that 802.11b, but if it comes 54g ready also that's a plus...but not needed.

PM, reply here, or email me at thepachman@gmail.com

None. win95 no chance in hell! :)

u need at least at LEAST A pentium 2 300mhz, with win98 se
but that for wireless cards what where release like 1 year or 2 ago.

Most new wireless cards require at lease 600mhz.. now..

And his laptop has to have at least a 32 bit pci bus

I picked up a trendware 802.11b card for an old laptop (166mhz mmx with cardbus) running 98SE. It works perfectly well. Adapter cost something like 10 bucks after rebate from Newegg. The key point is that it requires a cardbuss pc slot on the laptop otherwise the card wont seat. Also, you will need 98SE (or better) for the OS. So if you have a cardbus slot and if you have 98SE you should try it. BUt if you don't I wouldn't even bother. But, you can also do it another way and it will work (although it might be cheaper to get another laptop). You can get a wireless client (such as a linksys wep 11) or an access point that will work as a client (such as a wap54g). In the latter case you will also need it to work with the same brand of router or access point, at least if you get a linksys AP in client mode. And of course, he will have to plug an rj45 cable between the access point and the laptop (which will need an ethernet adapter).

Search the Inernet for an Old Proxim WLAN card. They run on a 16bit PCMCIA.

Proxim/Orinoco cards as found on ebay - include win95 drivers, never tested them, but they are reported to work. I have an enterasys one that is rebranded with the external antenna jack - works in pretty much any os you are likely to use. I bought one from the following guy - came with all the drivers needed and the antenna An example of the card from a good seller
It's about the only one I've seen that is advertised to work.
If you like, I have an old P90 at home and one of these cards. If you can gimme a couple days I will load win95 on it, test the card on it and let you know for 100% sure. PM me if you want.

How bout USB wireless adaptors? The range wouldn't change, as the laptop would literally just be sitting on a desk that we can't string a cat5 to, will USB adaptors work with 95?

What are you using for a wireless access point or wireless router on your wireless network?
