Wireless cam and router question

So here's the deal- I bought a Trendnet wireless cam and got it working wirelessly with the Wifi solo on my P5B deluxe mobo. However I can't upload images to my ftp server nor can I access the cam from a remote location.
I called tech support at Trendnet and after 45 min on the phone, the guy told me that my cam will not work wirelessly because I am not using a wireless router. So even though I can set it up wirelessly using the onboard Wifi on the mobo, he said that the cam has to wirelessly link to a wireless router. Currently I am using a vonage VoIP router (not wireless). This does not make sense to me. If the cam can communicate to the Wifi, why can't the image go from there to my ftp server? He said using the Wifi will only allow images to be seen on the home computer, not remote or ftp'able.
So I guess my question is, do I have to have a wireless router to make this work? I'm kinda pissed because there was nothing online that said the cam needs a wireless router to get full function. Is this just assumed? I can use an ethernet cable, but this defeats the purpose of using the cam wirelessly.

sorry guys, don't mean to sound impatient, but I was hoping to get this resolved tonite. i know one of you tech gurus has the answer🙂
