Wireless battery charging

I have an electric toothbrush that charges by placing it into a cradle, but there are no electrical contacts, it just charges wirelessly.

Can that technology be adapted to say, a wireless optical mouse? A mouse typically doesn't move too far from an area of a mousepad, so maybe it could exist in some sort of charging field there and thus be slowly charging all the time.

Wireless mice already do this. You are also misleading a bit by saying wireless. It is true it doesn't use magnets but what's the point if it is TOUCHING the charger? What is idea is charging some distance away.

Yeah, you can charge by induction, but you have to be REALLY close. I believe it is less efficient. someone is working on something along those lines, let me did up a link.

Found it...I know I posted this in a thread on ATOT before, but I couldn't find it (stupid search) but google found the popsci blurb.

wireless mice still have electrical contacts for the charging base. induction charging is more expensive and isn't necessary unless the device needs to be corrosion resistant.

Bingo! He nailed exactly why its never caught on.

what i was thinking more of not having a cradle..just using the mouse in the general vicnitiy of the reciever will charge it (ie..never had to place it somewhere to charge it..just mousing around will charge it cuz it's in some "field of charge")

It has to be millimeters away, so it would be just like your toothbrush. Also consider that you are generating a magnetic and electrical field of some strength, and it's going to compete with the mouse's transmitter in close quarters.

And what is the popsci link to crushable caps for?

You wish we had the ability to wirelessly transfer energy like that. :D

put some RF diodes in your mouse and put a microwave magnetron near your mousepad. not exactly healthy but should charge your mouse.

Electricity can be transmitted wirelessly. But, in order to do so, you have to give up a lot of other wireless signals, like radio :p
