I already have a D-Link DFL-200 so I don't need a router anymore. Do they make wireless access points without being jumbled into a router chassis that will sit there and do nothing? I'm only running a G card right now so that what I'll be looking for.

Of course they do, but the chassis size is the same as any router, and dedicated WAP's are generally more expensive than routers, so you're better off getting a router and making it act like a WAP (the mega-famous Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 is perfect, and it's pretty small).

yes, they do, but as mentioned, they often end up being more (but sometimes have more features, such as bridging mode). I just set up a coule Netgear Prosavfe WAG102's that are pretty solid AP's.

It would be easier to help you if you would tell us what is on your mind.

There are Access Point that can do more than the Router's Access Point.

However since Access Points are more expensive than Wireless Routers there is No point buying one unless you need the extras.

Otherwise, Using a Wireless Router as an AP - http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

I need a basic AP for when my friends come over they don't have to drag Cat5e around with their laptops. I didn't know if someone came out with a cheaper AP yet or would I have to go after one of the "all in one" combos that are popular now days. I want an AP with G capabilities and WPA or above encryption.
