Wireless Adapter Hooks Up to Wrong Network

This is sort of hard to explain.

Normally, I connect to my crappy Linksys WRT54G wireless-G router with my crappy Linksys WUSB54G wireless-G USB wireless card. I can connect to my network on the correct channel, 8, and get great speeds. A few minutes after I connect, however, I'm switched to a network with the same name but on channel 9 and with much, much slower speeds or no Internet!

What's going on here? I know for sure none of my neighbors have the same wireless SSID as me. The network on channel 9 possibly could have been set up by me a long time ago on the router, but it shouldn't exist any more.

I know I can upgrade my router's firmware, but will that help?

check wireless app, remove the "linksys" profile and don't autoconnect to networks. I don't ever use linksys client utilities, so I don't know how the do it, but it SHOULD be doable.
