Wireless Adapter for Desktop?

Hi all. I am moving into the basement of home. Wireless internet is included in my rent. I will be using a desktop computer to access the internet. It doesn't have any kind of wireless capability built into it, so I assume I need to buy a wireless adapter. Any recommendations? I'm running Windows XP, so it would need to be something compatible with that. Is there a decided performance advantage to USB vs an internal card, or vice versa? I am a heavy gamer, for whatever that's worth. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
