Wireless across the street.

I need to know what the least expensive and best way is to extent a wireless connection across the street. My client and neighbor want to share a connection. She sees the connection, but it's too weak. Both sides are wireless-n, but her laptop only has an inegrated card, so no external antenna. So I was considering an external wireless card with an antenna, a repeater on the neighbors side, or both.

Now I went to Best Buy and asked a person there if a repeater would work. He told me that a repeater only takes an existing connection strength and extends it, as in it doesn't regenerate the signal. But I read that a repeater regenerates the signal, so who's right? My idea was to put the repeater in the neighbors window, hoping that the client will be able to tap into it.

Yes I have taken cell phone interferance into account, and some other things.

Thanks in advance.

Neighbor:
Desktop
Wireless-n dynex router

Client:
Laptop
Integrated wireless b,g,n card

If they are using G speed equipment.. Thats about the best you are going to get it:

BUT you can use a usb wireless card with enough cable to put it out the window and that will help the speed. But its really not going to improve that much.

ALso it is where the router is located, Thats a big key. If its close to the street facing the house or building as well as the wireless connection being on the street side. That will make a big difference..

You mean a usb wireless card attached to a usb extension cable run outside?

Yep do that, It will help some.. But it depends on where the router is located also.. The closest point to where you are located the better..

Nah, it's just not practical. What about a repeater placed in the neighbors window? If that won't help, then I will tell her she will need to pay for internet.

as an FYI, it is usually against the Terms of Service of an ISP to do what you are talking about doing.

If the aps/clients are on the ground floor where cars are going to be between them often, this is just going to be a pain in the ass even if you plant stuff in the windows.

It's a residential area and we're talking about houses, not like New York. So very minor traffic. But regarding the repeater, does it actually regenerate the signal?

The issue is Not whether a repeater is generate signal.
If the Repeater is where the laptop is and the signal is too weal for the Laptop it will be too weak for the repeater too.

Just tell her to pay for herself. If you don't need alot of bandwith, it ain't realy expensive.
it usually sounds nice but the first time your neighbor goes on vaccation and a) accidentially turns of the router or b) router hangs itself up then you have got a problem.
This can also happen any other day when the neighbor is not at home.
