Wireless 802.11b transfer rates, is this good or bad?

I'm currently copying a lot of data via FTP on an 802.11b network with 64bit WEP encryption. I'm getting sustained transfer rates of about 700-800 Kilobytes (yes bytes) per second according to my FTP client. This is a lot higher than I expected, considering I'm getting roughly 6-7Mbit and the router is on the 3rd floor and the computer I'm copying to is on the 1st floor (its almost a straight shot down though). Should I be expecting better or is this pretty good?

Thanks for any insight that can be provided!

That seems to be very good. Im getting around 5,2 mbit with a linksys gateway + pcmcia card. Around 5mbit seems to be the maximum throughput with the regular 802.11b. I'm getting around the same with 3com, orinoco and D-Link equipment.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I have 802.11b+ (Max throughput 22Mbps) and I'm using D-Link on both sides ... I was just surprised that I got such good throughput at a fairly long distance (no tweaking done at all too)

Perhaps the 22Mbps claim of increased throughput is true!

I have seen some reviews about the new D-Link router and all seems to agree that it got a longer range, and higher speed at longer range.

the material that was used to build the house may also be a big factor in your performance, but I dont know which materials are good or bad for the network. I thought about it for my house but my main PC burned and I had to set back the network plans :(
