Wireless 54G versus cat5

I haven't tested this yet, but is there a huge difference between using a cat5 versus 54mbps wireless about 5 feet away? I don't like the looks of a cat5 running around my room, even though it's stapled to the walls, but I also want the fastest possible speed for torrent, news, etc.

It really depends on what you are planning to do.
If you have a home server, and move big files, I would say to go for the Cat5e, it will be faster, and you can upgrade to a Gigabit LAN.
But if it just for you to web surf you will be fine with 802.11g (54 Mbps). It normally gets speeds of 22 Mbps, but never 54 Mbps. I think you will be fine, unless you have a internet connection with a speed greater than 20 Mbps.

Wireless will increase your latency slightly(doesn't much matter, except for twitch gaming, where it can be an issue) and will mean lower effective bandwidth. Given that most activity is probably going to be capped by your internet connection anyway, this won't matter much; but if you do extensive LAN side transfers you will notice.

wireless is ok, but nothig compared to wired. but for basic surfing you probably won't notice the difference. gaming you probably will. and you will probably not get 54Mb/s, the most i get is 48 and this sitting very close to the ap, across the condo it is usually 22.

54mb/s is the marketing term heh, its less than that in real world. take half if your lucky. its enough for web/torrents i guess. transfering a file from pc to pc across lan..ouch not so good. plus all the pc's share the same bandwidth, so if you have multiple pc's trying to copy stuff, its gonig to turn bad quick.

yea it says 48 or whatever, but thats just the connect rate. with overhead and the rest the resulting throughput is much less.
