Here's my situation, my internet connection is on the 1st floor of the house and all the computers on the 2nd floor. So what I was thinking was setting up the computers on the 2nd floor w/a switch and an access point (or bridge?? does it matter?) ... and then having a wireless router downstairs connected to the modem

does this seem ok? could i possibly get two WRT54G's(with the Sveasoft firmware) and get this setup working??? and hopefully it wont make a difference which switch i use upstairs right?

thanks for all the help

Why the upstairs switch? Why not just connect the upstairs computers via wireless cards? (What sort of distance from the broadband modem are we talking about?)

Or

Why not move the Internet connection + modem + router to the second floor?

Or

consider home phoneline networking

(is the Internet connect cable, DSL, or other?)

i ruled out the wireless cards cuz i have 4 computers (desktops), and soon getting a 5th... so getting a G-adapter for each seemed more expensive than the switch option, and plus the computers upstairs aren't so far apart (at max i'd say about 20 feet).... the distance to the modem is about 25 feet but thats thru the ceiling/wall ...

i'm on cable modem, and we (unfortunately) dont have a cable jack upstairs, idiot designers ;) so i can't move the internet connection upstairs w/o some serious work

thanks for helping out

So install 1 card, and share the connection w/ the others.

wouldn't that create a bottleneck?? and also i've never shared a connection on windows (or linux for that matter), but would having different OS's make a difference?

Different OS's in Windows should not matter as long as it is in the Windows family after 95. I know connections can be shared among nix and Windows but I am unsure of what flavors match. As far as a bottleneck, I am assuming you have DSL or cable. Unless you plan on using all your machines to dowload at the same time, I don't think a bottleneck would be a problem. Your other option is to share via the wall power plug.

you did not comment on phoneline networking. Does each location have access to your telephone lines, and what sort of wiring do you have? (If you have two pairs available at each location you may be able to run a wired Ethernet connection.)

the phonline wont work, no phone jacks in the two rooms where the computers r located, and the powerline thing, is that really legit?

Yeah, if the Hack works your plan is good.
Otherwise you can get One Wireless 802.11g Router and a: WET54GS5

The principle is what is described here as Mode 3: Wireless Network - Configuration Modes.
