Wired Router + Wireless Access Point??

I want the most stable setup as possible. I've heard good things about using a wired router with a wireless access point. Hogwash? BS? I don't see how it would help but I would love to hear some recommendations.

PS. I've heard good things about the SMC routers. And then I was going to use a D-Link access point.
 
I use a DSL-504 ADSL Router with a DWL-700AP on top - it's been running for almost 2 years with not a single issue 🙂 I could just be lucky though. From experience I find D-Link a good brand
 
Entry Level Access Points (AP) uses the same Radio that is put into the Wireless Cable/DSL Routers. So per-ce APs are not better.

However Access Points have more configuration Modes than Wireless Routers. They usually come with removable Antenna. You can place an Access point with one CAT5e POE in a better location than a Router with 6 Cables dragging of it.

So if you need Simple Wireless in Gateway Mode, and the Wireless Client is in the same room (or very close by). It does not make a Technological difference which one you use, since Wireless Routers are cheaper you better of with a Router.

Otherwise it depends on your specific needs.
