Wired network security with internet

My church just got DSL and has it routed to a few LAN outlets. Their setup is DSL to Lucent modem, modem to network switch via crossover cable. We don't want just anybody to be able to connect to the network and use the internet. We want some sort of security or password access to the WAN. Is there a way to do this with our current setup? I'm thinking we have to buy a router or firewall.

Thanks for the help!

Firewall with authentication if you feel that people are just going to plug in and use your LAN or set up a domain and make users login to that, altho that will give anyone with a user account on the domain the ability to use the 'net.
Bottom line is you need something to allow authentication of users. If you want to do it at the network level, you need a firewall.
