I stopped reading at "the 5-megapixel camera on the iPhone 4 has remained competitive with many higher-specced shooters on newer handsets." You mean that overhyped camera that over-saturated the crap out of every color and until it glows in the dark is "competitive?" Give me a break.
That's because Google pays for the marketing of the Nexus. Verizon will air a few commercials since it's on it's network but won't invest much in it. Samsung goes all out and advertises their S2, S3, Note, and Note 2 everywhere.
Exactly this. Samsung picked up a couple notes from Apple when it comes to advertising. Develop a huge hype for it before launch and make it a big deal. Advertisement definitely pays off. Now if only they could move away from "you're just a barista" to focusing more on what great features it has and how to use it in your day to day life. The whole "barista" ad, while sometimes funny, really doesn't tell me why the phone they're selling is worth buying or how cool it is. It just encourages me to make fun of people.
Probably the same people who think more megapixels = better. In other words, not any person I'd consider taking advice from on cameras and technology in general.
