Wire temperature ratings

I bought a heat gun to heat shrink the sleeves on my PSU but the gun only has two settings... 750 degs F and 1000 degs F. I noticed the actual PSU wires themselves had a temperature rating on them of 80 degs C. 80 degs. C (176 degs F) is much less than 750 degs F. After I gunned a few ends of the PSU I touched the molex connector and it was pretty damn hot. I only left the heat gun over the heat shrink for a few seconds...

My quesiton is... Will the heat gun melt the sheath/insulation of the wires and what is the 80 deg C rating on the sheath of the wires?

That has to be the temp of heater, not the air comming out. 1000 deg air comming out of that thing would be EXTREMELY dangerous! Anyway, just hold the gun 6-12" away from the wires and keep it moving and everything should be fine.

On second thought, I bet the 750 and 1000 are actually watt ratings, not deg F.

Nope... Those are temps not watt ratings... I can't find the heat gun on the Milwaukee site but here is one that is very similar...

Wow, well that thing is a bit overkill for shrink tube...LOL But like I said, just keep it some distance away from your work, fan the gun back and forth, and hold the work with some pliers or something similar so you don't burn the crap out of yourself.
