wire insulation repair

So i've had the Altec Lansing IM716 headphones for a while and they don't sound all that different, but the cord insulation is getting brittle/frayed and stripping off. I searched around on the net and there were no easy solutions or even any suggestions on where to go to get something like this fixed.
I've been getting by with adding on some liquid-insulating-electrical-tape goop that only works for a couple of weeks at best before even that falls apart. I'd like a more permanent fix for it before things get ugly for the wire underneath.

I was hoping that the AT gurus who might have dealt with this before might have some advice?
