I need to run a wire near an exhaust system.. what is a good way to protect it from melting?

This is semi-informative. Scroll down and there's a part about wiring.

Heat shields are important to add some space between the hot metal of the exhaust and whatever you're trying to protect, but be careful with your wire selection. Wire gets brittle after it heats up and cools down a few hundred to a few thousand times. It just depends on the wire's housing, insulation, etc.

You can buy tape that wraps around your exhaust and shields nearby components from heat.
