Wipout HD bug - how to report it?

Figured I'd start a new thread specific to this. The PS3 is connected to a component switch box, then to a receiver, then to TV. This TV ONLY ACCEPTS 480i/p and 1080i on it's component inputs, 8 year old HDTV. It's a dual scan CRT projection. I've set the PS3 to output 480i/p and 1080i only.

When I start Wipeout the quick intro plays but as soon as the game goes into the main screen I lose sync and get no picture, audio is there. If I force the PS3 to 480i/p only all is good. My only guess is the game is trying to output 1080i/120 (120 interlaced fields) since it wants to run at 1080p/60 frames.

I'll probably call and report it and maybe a fix will be released but wanted to know the best way to get attention to the matter and where to call. I guess PS support would be a start. I'll try to remove the receiver and switch to get that out of the way to confirm.

-edit-
You have got to be kidding me. Either I'm an idiot or my PS3 doesn't support analog HD output (or most likely both :( ). The only outputs on the back are "multi-out" and HDMI. Multi-out only allows 480. So pissed off right now.

This is almost certainly not the case. 1080i is 1080i60, end of story. More likely, the devs screwed up on the 1080i-only mode somehow.

bump, I'm an idiot...looks like my 80GB PS3 will not do anything over 480 over an analog connection.

Did you try connecting the component cables directly to the television?

That would be "difficult" to say the least. I'll try in hopes to put this "bug" to bed. However I think the problem is on my end, I only have the "multi-out" and HDMI outputs on my PS3. The multi-out for component apparently only supports non-HD resolutions.

In the PS3 setup I had the "component/D-Terminal" selected and appropriate supported resolutions by the display. My PS3 doesn't even have that output jack and only "AV Multi / SCART". I've got a VGA breakout cable if need be for RGB/HSV, but no output on the PS3. So pissed. So pissed that I'm an idiot and know better, so pissed that the game doesn't support 1080i with how I'm hooked up. So pissed that I bought a PS3 for HD gaming goodness and can't enjoy it.

Im confused. Are you saying you think the PS3 can't do HD over component? My PS3 is hooked up via component and outputting 720P

By the way, try putting your PS3 to output 720p, maybe your TV can scale it for you

That's what I'm saying. If I select "multi out", which is what the component cables are the only display options are 480i or p. There is no higher resolution available in the PS3 setup. There is a selection in the setup for "component", but this is for use with a d-connector output which my PS3 doesn't have.

If I select the component/d-connector I can select 1080i as an output resolution and the dashboard is in 1080i but as soon as the game goes to the game menu that's where I lose video.

I don't see what your problem is. I have my PS3 hooked up through the component cables at 1080i.

What kind of connector/port are you using on the PS3? I only have the "multi AV" and HDMI. No component/D-connector as shown in the PS3 setup.

I think he was referring to your saying the game has "many" issues. The game seems to have just one large bug and that's the freezing issue you mentioned. But even the freezing issue only seems to strike people with more than 50 people in their friends list, so most people won't even see it.

I don't think PS3s have anything other than HDMI and Multi-AV as far as physical video connectors go, but the cables you can plug into the Multi-AV port vary (thus the name). I haven't looked at the setting options in a while, but I'll take a look when I get home to see what the options are and figure out what might be going on here.

You can get multi-av with component cables. Official Sony ones are like $20, but you can get off brands anywhere for like $10. These are the same ones that were used on the PS2. before I used HDMI I used component cables and was able to use 1080p.

That's what I'm using - multi-av with component output, official sony ones from the metal gear solid bundle. Unless I'm just making a fool of myself even more.

Have you been able to play any games or demos in HD? The behavior sounds like my friend's Westinghouse TV, which has a known HDCP handshake issue, but that shouldn't be a problem with component.

I think that the composite and component cables use the same port. D-terminal is a Japanese connector type, according to the PS3 manual: Video Output Settings.

Are you sure that you have component cables? When I searched, I saw a few posts complaining that the MGS bundle comes with composite only.

Edit: It seems like there is some sort of MGS4 bundle that does come with cables and games.

That is exactly the component set I have, was in the MGS bundle I got.

If I select "multi-AV" connection in PS3 display settings I only get 480 output as options. If I select "component/D-connector" I get HD resolutions as options.

I'm more than happy to own myself as long as I can figure it out.

The cable included has a multi-av on one end and RGB and red/white audio cables on the other end. Again, the dashboard has no problem displaying 1080i...only in game is the problem.

You do not want "AV MULTI / SCART", that's a PAL connection.

OK - so I select "component/D-connetor" and get HD resolutions, dashboard is indeed 1080i and works fine. Intro to game is fine and is 1080i...but once IN GAME...loss of sync. That's a bug. It's sending something other than 480i/60, 480p/30, 1080i/60. That's a bug.

I just started up a game in 1080i, and it played just fine.

Make sure all of your other settings in the display menu are at the defaults--Off/Limited/Off.

Have you ever wondered if the problem lies in your switch box/receiver/TV mess, and not the game? Hmmm...

Connect PS3 directly to TV's component port and play the game and see what happens.

Yes I have, and that's where I'm leaning. Hence, my idiocy.

-edit-
just to make me look like even more of an idiot...

PS3 multi-AV output port, component, directly to display and I have 1080i gameplay. Tried this first with a smaller display and it worked and moved on to the theater.

Point remains, no other sources through switch/receiver have this problem. But I recant my "bug" declaration.

Reason #143 to redo the theater.
