i know military does a 7 pass wipe, but how good is a full format in windows xp? how difficult would it be to recover data from just a full format? aside from some data recovery company, could a guy into hacking and stuff be able to recover data?

Just a regular format will not completely destroy data.

You can buy software to recover data from HDs from your local computer software store.

Seems like there have been a few of these threads in the last few weeks. What are people storing on these drives that is so secret? Or are you wanting to try to recover something off of an accidental format?

One guy wanted to wipe a new HD clean because he needed to RMA the drive. He was concerned that someone that might be able to service the drive might be able to retrieve some sensitive info that he put on it (i.e. financial records). So I can understand why some would be concerned.

That's why you encrypt that type of stuff. ;)
