Wiping a hard drive to sell on Ebay?

I'm selling an old 45GB HD on Ebay, but I'd like to completely wipe it before I ship it. I searched the forums and found Dban recommended, however from what i could tell it wipes all hard drives? I don't want to wipe my new 250gb HD.... Any suggestions? Thanks

is it windows based or dos based disk ?

if dos based, just unplug all your drive except for that one

Low level format will erase data also. Although you will probably have to do it at least twice. On other utilities this is called, "zero'ing".

There is a utility called BCWipe from Jetico that adheres to DoD and Fed specs for data wiping. You can target anything from individual files on up to entire drives, and I believe there is an eval version.

I think a regular format, followed by an FDISK and format is pleanty. ANd that's about half the time of a low level format.

Actually we were still able to retrieve data on a disk that had its partitioned removed then rebuilt and then on top of that formatted. I think a low level format times two would be a decent enough format to wipe all the data off of the drive.

Yup. Good old DBAN. Its settings range from single pass zero wipe, and I think it goes to that 35 pass Gutmann wipe pattern. Do that only if you've got a long time to spare. 🙂

I have a spare computer setup to plug drives into just for this reason...

"The Master Blaster" 😀

Last time I sold some hard disks, I just formatted the drives, filled them to capacity with junk files, formatted again and repeated maybe 2 or 3 times.
