How do you know its time to change wiper blades?

My wife is bugging me on how noisy her wiper blades are but its really cleans the windshield very well. She said it skips and stutters at is goes through her windshield. I said she was nuts. Whats the opinion here? Should I change because its noisy and cleans well?

What do women know?

Go and check, If its still quiet, wiping well no need to change.

Most of the time the blades them selfs might be hella dirty. Just get some water(water and soap if you want) on paper towels and wipe the blades. That usually fixes things for a bit.

remove the wipers and hand her a squeegee

Or maybe her windshield itself is dirty. Clean it (inside too while your at it) with a good auto glass cleaner.

If it's misty she should use an intermittent setting. Needs more water on the glass.

You could apply some Rain-X and then the droplets would just blow off. No wipers necessary.

Your wife is right, time for new wiper blades. Skipping over the windshield is bad.

Looks like we have a bunch of "experts" who think your wife is stupid enough to use the wipers when the windshield is dry. Guys, my wipers skip in heavy rain. Does that mean I'm a stupid woman?

The rubber can break down after only a few months.

if there isn't enough water it's normal that it squeaks.
See if the gum is cooked or something.

She runs it when it's misty out but ihave to admit it's really noisy. It cleans really well though

If they're cleaning "really well", they can't be skipping. Those are mutually-incompatible descriptions. If he's right and the wife is wrong, then they don't need new wipers. If the wife is right and he's wrong, then they do. There's absolutely no way for us to know given the information we have.

Mine skip and squeak and they clean really well

I don't see how that can be, if they're skipping they're leaving gaps as they skip...

In any case, if the parts that are getting cleaned are good, then the rubber's fine and the issue is a worn spring that doesn't provide as much pressure as it should.

The skipping points are thin lines, and in between those lines they wipe perfectly

This. I've bought a bunch of different blades and Bosch is now my choice.

I haven't tried those. I got the Rain-X ones on sale last year and they worked great but it's time for some new ones. I don't really feel like paying more than $20 for a set of blades.

Mine skip really bad too and they are brand new. I always suspected the springs. It is easy to replace something like that?
