BTW, someone's selling 50 mobile Celeron 1.8 CPUs on Ebay for $1100. That's $22/each (not counting shipping).

Group buy?

Hey Zap,
Thats the guy I bought my pair of mobile celery from. Nice guy, the owner communicates nicely through email. If you want to buy small amount, ask him. Thats how I got my celeries. :D

Hey thanks for your reply. The p4p800S has a different chipset. Its got an intel 848P chipset whereas the p4p800 deluxe and p4p800 has a i865pe chipset. Thats why I was wondering if it worked for anybody.

My board is RMAed hope to get it this week and the cpus are on their way. I was just trying to get a head start on the research :D

Yeah. I asked him if he had any of these on sale separately. He made a new auction with two celeries. I got both. Like I said, nice guy. Who would make a new auction based on an inquiry.

Oops - Sorry about the above, just a bit quick on the trigger finger on a new forum!

Just wanted to share my Mobycell experience so far:

Picked up a 2.4 (D1) on ebay for $40 about a month ago and stuck it in a QDI P2PE/800 Pro ($24.00 mobo - 845PE) and it posted without any mods. Capped the 133 MHz jumper on the Mobo and it popped up at 3.2 (1.6V) no sweat. Huzzah! Been running stable as such for the past month but I want more. The CPU will post at 3.6 and mostly load XP at 3.45 before it goes boom. This Mobo has no PCI/AGP settings or voltage settings and temps are a bit much but it's in an old case with NO auxiliary fans. Idles at about 50C and hits 60+ at load...a bit too much for sure. I want to get this puppy up to 4.0 if it kills (my hardware 8^)

Just received an MSI 865GM2-LS and I plugged in the 2.4 straight up...Nada. Did the AE1 mod and up she comes at stock 2.4 and a subnormal 1.2V. Temps are running 38-39C out of a case with just PSU and stock Intel 2.8 Gig HSF. Unfortunately the MB does not have the voltage controls that were quoted on the MSI website but the FSB, PCI/AGP settings I was hoping for are here. It has a voltage boost though for raising AGP voltage - Heh?

I can currently only set the FSB for up to 132 MHz (gonna have to do the 133 mod then methinks up to 165 will be available). I can get it to boot fine up to 125 FSB as is (3.0 Gig-temps don't change at all) but if I set it any higher it reverts automagically to 2.4/100. Odd thing is with some settings between 125-132 it boots at FSB below 100 (97-98 Mhz, etc.)

I'm wondering what is the highest clock people have gotten on voltages near stock (1.3V). After doing the 133 MHz pin mod (after the AE1 pin
trick) I'd like to avoid having to also mod the voltage. The CPU will start to look like it's "homemade."

Is this a mATX 865G chipset board? I got one for my fiancees computer because I was hoping for a mATX board with overclocking. Well, AFAIK the original BIOS had CPU voltage that didn't work, then the CPU voltage was removed from BIOS. The one I received didn't have CPU vcore, but had all the other stuff. Then, upgraded to newest BIOS and even MORE overclocking stuff was removed. :disgust: Ah well, it never wanted to be stable anything other than default for me anyways with a 2.6C that overclocked okay in my previous Abit IS7.

Zap - It's the same puppy! Real POS. Sounded kind of like a premium board. Guess it was no accident I could't find any reviews around. Turns out my old Generic MB is a better clocker than this $50 board...sigh.

Did the 'ol 133 FSB mod and now the MSI just does intermittent single long beeps. Guess it just can't handle the 24x133 setup.
Strange thing though is that now the chip won't post anymore in the POS QDI board. Maybe I did a booboo during the mod though visually everything looks OK on the chip. Sure wish I had thought to have a backup 478 CPU around before I decided to "go for the gold" 8^)

BTW - How the heck do youse guys do these chip Mods on 478 chips. The things are so damn small (I'm and old guy and seeing what I was doing was an adventure for sure). What tool(s) do you use to clip a pin?

Regards,

Use the metal tip from a .5mm mechanical pencil. Slip the tubular tip over the pin in question and bend it back/forth until pin breaks off. I also sometimes use fine tipped needle nose pliers and slotted screwdriver - same thing by bending back/forth until it breaks off.

Doesn't make sense that it no longer works on the QDI board unless you really did booboo one of the mods. Hmmm, you did the AE1 volt mod after getting the MSI board, right? Did you break the pin or just bend it? If you bent it, perhaps you can carefully straighten it and then see if it works again in the QDI board.

Hi Zap - I did the AE1 mod when the MSI came in and it came up. I bent the pin and bent it back to reinsert in the QDI mobo. I'll have to take a look in the light of day to see if there's anything I can spot.

Thanx for the mech pencil tip. It's a real DOOH! but I hadn't thought of it. Will come in handy in future fubars...

Gah! I hate that the Forums don't email you on every post any more. :( I lose track of what's going on!

I'll update the OP when I get some time. And since Batch71 is shy, here's what he has told me:

I have successfully fired up a DELL 400SC with the 875P chipset and a 1.6 that I bought from you, it has the bent pin

:D

Does that mean Batch71 has it running at only default 1.6GHz or did he take advantage of the 875P chipset? ;)

Karaktu, when you update the OP, might want to mention that the $10 cheaper Asus P4SP-MX board might be a good one for a budget HTPC setup. Sure it doesn't have an AGP/PCI lock and the chipset only supports 400/533, but it has a coaxial SPDIF on the rear ATX I/O. The mobile Celerons run great in it.

I wouldn't dare take advantage of INTEL and their 875P so......... Yes is is running at stock but I thought it might be of interest to any and all with a 400SC barebones without processors in them that for short money, they can have it up and running!!!

BTW, I am not that shy

Just bought a 1.6 and a 1.8, hoping for at least one good OC, and a ASUS P4 P4S800-MX SiS661FX, too bad those are up to $60+, and some G. SKill LL DDR 400 for less than $100... :D I'll be posting my results next week!

For that kind of cash, I'd get a P4P800 since you'd get dual channel memory.

I got one p4s800-mx from them. It has not arrived yet, will let you guys know how my shot at overclocking goes.

I just found another deal. Newegg is selling refurb versions of p4s800-mx for $29 plus $1 shipping. Dang it if I knew I would have tried that myself.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-476R&depa=0

While you guys are driving yourselves crazy, you do realize I have been known to sell a P4S800-MX with I/O shield, 1.8GHz CPU and HSF for $97.70 shipped, right?

Edit: BTW, the "version 1.04" ASUS P4S800-MX is old info. They're all version 2.0.x now, and why Newegg charges $16 more for this over a "regular" P4S800-MX board, I have no idea.

I like mATX, except for usual lousy overclocking features and lousy selection of cases. :disgust: Aspire just came out with some slick looking cases similar to the Antec Aria. They are aluminum, have windows in sides and top, LCD display in front, handle, LED fans, available in 5 colors... I just wish I knew how quiet they are. Heck, with a mobile Celeron overclocked to around 3GHz and a good AGP video card this can make a nice gaming rig.

Old benchmarks I ran when I first started fooling with these chips:

3DMark03 Mobile Celeron at 3.0GHz (6306) versus P4 at 3.45GHz (6521) with everything the same but the CPU and memory!

Got a link to that case?

For HTPC use

Highly recommended :)

Aspire X-Qpack

Looks to be a rebranded Chenming 118 case. I just wonder how quiet the included fans are and if a standard ATX power supply can be utilized (stock "420W" only puts out 13A on +12v).

Chenming 118

Newegg has the Aspire for $100 shipped. No sightings of the Chenming in the wild yet.

Ahahaha, just got rid of my last Prescott CPU today out of around six that I went through. Have a couple of mobile Bartons and my P4 Northwood gaming rig to sell plus my two socket 370 servers to replace, then all my systems will be mobile Celerons except for one A64 and a Pentium M notebook.

I think the mobile Celerons would perform a bit snappier on a dual channel board, but ahh well... decent enough with single channel RAM and I'm liking the SiS chipset Asus mATX boards.

Ok, got sick of waiting for the P4S800-mx to arrive. So took out my deleron 325 2.53@3.4ghz and replaced it will 1.8ghz mobile celeron C1 stepping in the Abit AI7 mobo. After playing with few parameters I got it running at 2999.x mhz at 167mhz fsb at 1.475v with a simple 512 Geil 3200 ram. Had to do the AE1 pin for the mobo to post.

Temps Idle 36C, full load with prime95 43C using a zalman CNPS7000A-cu in a case with 6 fans. People gets such low temps I wonder why I can't. The PWM temp in the abit EQ shows 33 at idle and 41 at full load.

Question to the gurus, do these numbers look ok? my psu is sort of crappy 420watt with only 13A on the 12V rail! I cant afford to loose the AI7. Poor college student.

Performance drop is quite a bit from the 3.4 Deleron. Doom 3 lags at high details, NFSU2 demo also lags quite a bit. Will try dual channelling and will post results. Using a FX5500 256mb with stock clock/memory speed. Yeah I know crappy video card, what more can I expect!

Recent experiences with the mobile Celeron.

Just tried one of the mobile Celerons in an Asus P4P800S-X motherboard (848P chipset). Didn't work. Would POST, but then say "invalid Intel CPU uCode" or something like that. If I tried to enter BIOS, screen would go whacked. A P4 is currently running fine in the board. BIOS version 1008. Strange.

Last night, was playing C&C Generals: Zero Hour and the computer would lock. Happened twice, hitting reset and going immediately into BIOS showed 52ºC CPU temp. I guess that 800RPM NMB fan on an Alpha heatsink running almost noise-free just doesn't cut it after sustained full CPU usage. Was running at around 2.98GHz and 1.65v, lowered it to 2.8GHz and 1.55v, lasted longer before it locked. This is my mobile Celeron setup in the Albatron PX845PEV Pro board. Incidentally, voltage can be lowered to 1.1v on this board.

Feeling kinda flush with my recent successes with the mobile Celerons, I snagged two mobile P4 chips from Eg@y a few minutes ago. Theoretically the 12X multiplier can get me up to around 3.2GHz with the 260MHz setting in the Asus P4S800-MX BIOS if the hardware can handle it.
