I use Compressed Folders because they are convenient, however they are significant slower for unzipping large archives.

I keep WinRAR installed in case I need to deal with a large ZIP file.

I like WinRar and as a second choice, Winzip.

For me the ability to right click and say "extract to (archive name) folder" is paramount.

WinRar has some great compression features that Winzip lacks.

Windows zip functionality was never meant to replace Winzip. It's just there so you can open zipfiles legally without that super expired demo copy you have. Winzip figured it was better to get some small royalties from MS than to get nothing from pirating demo users.

Does that mean that the built-in Zip functionality is licensed from WinZip, ala the Defragger from Diskeeper?

use 7-zip, I do wish it's context menu items were cleaned up a bit, more like WinZip's, but what can you expect from free software.... plus it will open ANY archive out there.

We have power archiver on the computers on campus, and for the programing classes I had to take my freshman year, we used it to submit all the files we created in the C++ lap. it's an okay program, nothing at all wrong with it. however, I like winrar far better, though.

Not true. ZIP is NOT copywritten by WinZIP.

He didn't say it was copywritten by WinZip, just that Microsoft is leasing WinZip's code for compressing and decompressing zip files, like they lease their burning engine from Roxio.

I know the Roxio thing is true, but I don't know about WinZip. It wouldn't surprise me though.

I go with the Windows default, then WinRAR. I've not used WinZIP in years... doubt I ever will again.

Winrar does that too, right click on a rar file & you have 3 choices
Extract files.....
Extract Here
Extract to (folder named same as file)

Uh

That's why I like WinRar and as a second choice, Winzip.
Winzip does it in a cascaded menu. WinRar has it at the top level by default.

then just go into options & select cascaded context menu.

Wow.

We are really miscommunicating because you keep clarifying things to me :p This is quite possibly my fault.

I like WinRar better than Winzip
WinRar has a top-level "extract" option in the context menu.
I like this setting and although I know it can be changed I don't want to.
I like Winzip better than Windows

:beer::thumbsup:

I guess, because i read that you like winrar as a second choice, meaning you prefer winzip.

Now I'm really confused. lol

So let's make it clear,

from best to worse

Winrar > Winzip > windows built in util.

After a clean install i alway disable that built it util since i prefer using Winrar. :)

To Remove Zip Integration
Go To Start > Run and type:

regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll
and press `ok`.

sorry about the confusion, let's all keep Smilin ;) ;)

I use both 7-zip and WinZip. Some password protected archives created with WinZip will only unlock with WinZip. 7-zip is just flat out cool, free, and handles rar archives to boot.

7-zip is pretty much the best, especially for future proofing. 7-zip is the only current zip program that supporst multi-threaded processing.
