WinXP's winlogon.exe keeps running?

I noticed yesterday that my computer was running very slow, I checked the taskbar for open apps but I had nothing running. Then I check the performance tab in taskbar and found my cpu usage was running between 40 and 50%. So I checked the processes tab in taskbar and could see that winlogon.exe was constantly running. I then rebooted and that seem to fix it til this afternoon when it happend again.

What could cause the winlogon.exe to just start running constantly? It's not like it got stuck on when I first logged on because I have been using my computer for a while already before it started running again.

Thanks for any suggestions

lots of processes run all the time. They just don't use any CPU time. Sort the list by "CPU" to see what is using most of the time, or by memory to see if anything is hogging ram.

Yes, that's what I did that's how I know it was winlogon.exe causing the problem, it was constanly running both times it's happened.
