wow, i just built myself a server

k6-2/500
40 gig drive
4x8 cdr
64mb pc66 (soon to be 256mb pc100)
via mvp4 mb
2 3com 3c905s

so i setup remote access, so that i can burn CDs on it since my laptop doesnt have one. I cant believe how easy it was. And its fast too. Windows XP is the greatest OS. i love this thing. I was browsing the web from my server through my laptop. wow

wait till someone finds the backdoor and hacks it. You know how bad MS products are. That's why I turned that sh-t off to be safe. This seemed like a weakness in the OS, a likely place for someone to find a vulnerability. I like that they have the feature, and maybe I'd use it if I had another computer, but I don't, so I'm gonna keep it off.

I really want to try that feature. I just ordered an academic priced copy from edu.com, but unfortunetly they are backordered. Hopefully they get more in soon.

it's professional, without needing all that activation crap. for example, i have the corporate edition of windows 2000... it doesn't ask me for a key when i install it. nice and convenient :)

basically all you need is two computers running winxp. they can be on the internet even (you can remote access over modem, my friend tried it , she thought it was cool too) , or on a lan with internal IPs.

2k server has this ability.... WinXP just has it built in with the install.... I use Terminal Services all the time here at work when logging into customers servers...

XP has that feature? It's about time, Linux has had it since... Well, since it's birth I guess (that's about 10 years) ;)

Is there a way to access an XP remote server on a different OS? Is there a browser access like with VNC or a client that somebody not on XP can download to access an XP server?

wow, thank you, thank you, thank you! I was gonna post a thread asking where is a good place to buy student priced software. looks like www.edu.com is the one! Thanks!!! :D

Also, we're installing our copy of XP at work today. Can't wait to get there and play around with it. We need it badly too. Every new HP, Compaq, eMachines, etc computer is gonna come with XP in some form or another. Since we have to do Internet setup and tech support for our customers, this will really help.

It is not fun trying to walk someone through setting up their connection or helping them troubleshoot a problem when you don't have good working knowledge of their OS.

You can do this with any windows OS with netmeeting..just activate remote desktop sharing... win2k server has built in terminal services, same exact thing, except much better. Multiple users... or you can use the free software VNC... xp is nothing new..
