Just picked up a copy of winxp pro and tried to install it as an upgrade over top of my win2k pro OS and all i get after it loads some set up files, is a blue screen with Stop error and a bunch of numbers.

Then i tried to install this xp pro on all my other systems and they all give stop errors on a blue screen! what the heck is this?!

So now im out some cash and i cant install this xp pro either.. all my systems are running perfect with no hardware issues etc.. (all systems are 600mhz or higher with latest drivers etc etc)

How can i prevent a stop error during the setup?

Clean install is absolutely not necessary. I have XP Pro installed over a perfect running ME and my XP Pro boots up faster than my friend who did that so-called clean install. I also have fewer problems than he does.

If you got that same defective installation on several different computers then it is more likely you have a defective install CD. Check with where you bought XP Pro and see if they will give you a replacement install CD.

I think RBL is just trying to raise his/her posting account number with unrealistic comments. With 3590 notes posted??

Write down the name of the STOP error and the numers you see. You can usually find a listing for the error at microsoft.com/technet

What's so unrealistic about it? A clean install will yield fewer problems than an upgrade would - that's just fact. So, what do my # of posts have to do with it? I think you have a case of penis envy, dude.

BTW - Microsoft is the only company that will replace the cd, in the very unlikely event that it is defective. If I were you, I would back up all of your important data and try the clean install.

thx guys for all your ideas.

Tho i do kinda think its VERY odd for the install to give stop errors on ALL 4 of my systems. Doesnt that just seem a bit too strange?

So in other words, ill need to do a clean install on all 4 puters in order for winxp pro to work properly, even tho these systems are running win2k pro with out a hint of problems what so ever.

Wow.. i cant believe M$ would make it so difficult to go over to a new OS.. thats a bit concerning!

Anyway, thx for the help and advice.. i need to then seriously think it over if i wanna sit down and trash then redo each system to run xppro on them.

/sigh

I would have a hard time with 4 systems having the same problem.. sounds more like a corrupted install disk. Is this "a copy of winxp pro " a legit MS disk or a burn?

They give you a system checker to make sure that hardware and software compatable with XP . Maybe you have one old program that causing your trouble . You have thirty days to bring it back if it's compatable . Another note is run the up date as soon as you can .

The meaning of a STOP error depends on all those numbers.

I'm willing to bet you have a device driver installed on all 4 of your computers that's incompatible with WinXP. Antivirus, perhaps. I think you're jumping the gun by placing the blame at MS' feet without know what the issue really is.

Please post the numbers. They really do have meaning.
