WinXPhome resets on various disk tasks

In WinXP Home explorer, if I right click any drive and choose Properties to see amount used and pie chart, the machine restarts abruptly. Some sort of driver conflict, but what? I have loaded this machine fresh with a ton of stuff recently and don't know where to start. What pieces of hardware act like this? Or is it likely software/driver?

All suggestions appreciated.

Hi,
Open a DOS command prompt and type sfc /scannow. Have your XP disk ready. This checks all your system files against the originals.

Okay, I got home and tried the above. Did not work because my disks are restore disks for an eMachines system. Can't use the other XPhome disk I have for some reason. System File Checker did start and ask for the disk, but nothing I could feed the drive would satisfy it.

Any other ideas for restoring the system files?

Will system restore roll me back and eliminate those apps that I have installed since the last restore point? There were several, but I guess if it did, I could reinstall the ones that were effected.
