Ok, first thing you need to understand. ME is the biggest pos out there period. I would run 95 over ME and have fewer problems by far.

You need to do a clean install of XP. You can do a clean install using the upgrade XP disc. It will simply prompt you to insert the ME disc for verification purposes.

Boot from the XP cd and format the computer. Your computer is fast enough for XP correct? Feel free to pm me with any questions.

I agree, ME is - crap. I'll be nice.

The problem with your XP install, IMO, is that you upgraded instead of doing a clean install. As was suggested, install Windows XP clean an I bet you'll have a much better experience than your current install.

The clean install means the (Advanced option right) Where it says that it will replace the current Windows instead of Upgrading it?

Uh, I guess. I honestly haven't ever tried an upgrade to XP from a 9x system. I would guess yes. You basically will loose anything that's on the partition now, so be sure to back everything up. You could also boot from the Windows XP CD instead of running the install from within Windows.

Yes... You will be happy you did. Boot to the upgrade CD, Replace. During the install it may ask for Qualifying ME CD.
