winxp workgroup (non) browsing

this one is bugging me. any thoughts?

i have a winxp, win2k, and linux machine on a lan. here's how they behave..

win2k can browse workgroup, hit //computername, and all shares (including linux machine running samba)
win2k had been unable to authenticate to winxp shares until i enabled the winxp guest account
so the win2k machine is fine..

winxp can see the win2k machine via \\computername
winxp cannot see the linux machine via \\computername
winxp cannot see any computer by browsing the workgroup - i get a permissions error

the linux machine doesn't need to see anything as it is file server..

what gives with xp not seeing the workgroup? there is a regkey for secure/plain text logons that i had to do to let the win2k machines authenticate with samba. i suspect the same with winxp. what irks me is the no-workgroup browsing..

any thoughts?

I had nearly the same problem, with a XP machine where your 2k machine was, and a ME machine in place of your XP. Heres what I did:

Remove network card
Remove computer from room
Play Red Alert 2 on computers that did work

The W2K machine wouldn't be multi-homed would it??? That is belonging to 2 different network segments. If so you may want to get a copy of browstat.exe and use it to determine which computer is functioning as the master browser. If the W2K machine is multi-homed and is acting as the master browser the XP box will not be able to see it in the workgroup. There is a way to prevent the W2K machine from being the master browser if this is the problem. You need to modify the registry key:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\MaintainServerList
to "No" for a W2K box. See this article for more details: Control Network Browser Elections .

Browstat.exe is included with the sampler Resource Kit on the W2K CD-ROM.
