I do the typical "turn off computer" it acts like, says its shutting down then reboots back on. I have to turn off the power supply. Just started doing this. Ran every virus, spyware, update available. Whats going on? Thanks

Boot into safe mode then try to get a clean automatic shutdown.
Also check the BIOS settings Power Management to make sure that nothing weird is going on. I disable most power management settings & set the "power off" button to either hard shutdown or 5 sec. soft shutdown.
Also ensure in the BIOS "boot" area that you disable things like boot from LAN or touch of keyboard spacebar, etc. Also some BIOSes provide for startup/boot based on timer/clock setting. Disable all these things.

It won't let me get fully into safe mode. It scrolls hundreds of lines of code, then stops. Now on start up it asks to use checkdisk, I allow it and it stops at step 2 or 3 and goes no farther. I tried a restor point a month ago but it takes me to the check disk with same results. From what I recall, I have never been able to run check disk on this computer for some reason. Once I get into windows and leave it on, everything works fine. I'm reviewing all my programs and deleting those I don't need.

Sounds bad. Goto your Hard Drive's manufacturers website and download Diagnostic software, run it.

Good idea. If its a Maxtor or SeaGate then SeaTools will allow for some types of repairs & restoration (eg, bad spot on the disk). However, depending where such a spot happens to be located, the HDD will be restored to useability but you might have to use the OS CD to repair the OS.

Sounds like you have nothing to lose so try an OS repair. Repair leaves your installed programs, data files & settings intact. Boot from the OS CDROM. As I recall, at the first blue data screen you will want to press "Enter" (otherwise pressing "R" there gets you to the Restore Console which is not what you want). In the next (ie, second) blue data screen selecting the "R" option will commence the repair process. It will look formidable, but you'll be fine. I dont do repair often so I dont remember if the CD Key is needed , but be sure to have it ready if needed.

Everything seemed to revolve around messages that I needed to run checkdisk, I tried to defrag and it wouldn't let me saying checkdisk was scheduled to run. After several tries it finally ran and seems to be working now. Thanks for all the input.

Be sure to deactivate any scheduled tasks in Control Panel "Scheduled Tasks".
The problem might reoccur if tasks (eg, checkdisk & defrag) are scheduled to periodically automatically run.
I find it best to perform these maintenances maually.
