Hi All,

This may seem a little conspiratorial, but I've been trying to download Mepis and Knoppix linux all day and the downloads just stop after 7 or 50 or 100 or 400 Megabytes.

I've tried re-booting, changing the download location, tried different mirrors, disabled my Norton AV, used the ExplorerPlus FTP software....nothing seems to work.

I just tested my connection and I'm at 3,428 Mbps.

I've concluded that MicroSoft is sabotaging me! Does anyone have an idea about what else could be the problem?

Thanks.

I've downloaded Knoppix and many other versions of Linux using XP, so its not that.

MS does not prevent you from downloading Linux. Does you rig go into powersaving mode during the download?

No, I turned off my screensaver and turned all Power settings to NEVER (Never turn montor off, Never turn disks, etc.)

(I was just joking about the conspiracy--helps get page views.)

There must be some sort of setting somewhere. Also, I've got a minimum of 45GB free on each of 4 partitions.

maybe your isp is dropping your connection after a certain amount. I suggest getting a program that will let you resume downloads.

Or Getright, or some download manager. Just be sure to check that it doesn't come with spyware or adware attached to it.
Download managers let you pause and resume downloads, and they can also resume a download that's been interrupted by something external, like a connection failure somewhere.

I use leechget as it comes with a plugin for Mozilla/FF :)

Thanks for the tips everybody. I probably do need to get a download manager.

By the way, we got 12+ inches of snow yesterday (the day I was trying to do the download).

I thought it wouldn't be an issue since the cable is buried, right? But that could have been the issue?

Edit....
DotheDamnTHing: Yes, I am behind a router. Why?

Question for you on BitTorrent: Aren't I exposing my system to hackers if I open a port (or several) as I must do to use BT?

I don't know a lot about networks, ports and protocols, but I certainly don't want to get hacked!

Which ISP do you have & which router and/or hub ?

I have cox's and when school is out for the holidays my connect speed would suck.

Cox said to reset the modem & router , but that wouldn't last for long. Not until I got a static IP did my problems (for the most part) get better.

BitTorrent is your best bet. It is capable of easily resuming broken downloads.

BTW. If you poke holes in your firewall for BT, then the ONLY way a hacker can get it is by exploiting a hole in BT itself. And I have not heard of any problems with BT. BT should only need ONE port opened.

Hi Guys,

Update: I installed LeechGet and it worked on the first try! I'm getting 3.4 Mbps (Adelphis on Linksys router), but obviously, it isn't stable enough to dowload a 700 MB file all at once.

Thanks for all the tips and info.
