my firneds system had a random restart and wont boot,

its file that is corupted is:
C:\windows\system32\config\system ( i think thats right)

i ran Repair : chkdsk, fixmbr and fixboot ( i think that last one is right)

none of which had any success.

dont want to have to re-format :(

is there a way for WinXP to install over itself like Win98 used to ??

thanx in advance anyone ...

FDISK /MBR

is the command to fix the boot record. Not sure if that's what you're asking or not. Actually there may be one more switch in there as well.

oh i never saw fdisk in the options.

i thought if i hit ENTER and the seledt the partition there will be a repair option there,
done it before and a guy in here said that.

but that option is not there this time round for some reason ?!?!
