WinXP Users, What 56K Modem Do You Use?

I recently upgraded from Win98se to WinXP Pro SP1 and I can't find a modem that works properly. Please let me know if it was easy to install and use, what model, where to buy, and how much?

Have you ever heard of something called an "HCL?" It stands for "Hardware Compatibility List." Microsoft has a lot of them for various OSes...

Try this link.

I use a Lucent/Agere win modem because it is cheap, less than $15.00 at sams club, and because there are easy linux drivers for it.

I use(d) and have tested 4 and all Externals and hit 50K+ out here in the country...USR Robotics Sportster, Cnet Single Point, Diamond 56KFlex, and GVC's

Edit...External's the way to go IMO... I strap my Modems together on 2 phone lines and Here's the result 😎

I`m on ADSL now but still have my old Elsa Microlink(HCF) PCI 56K modem installed in XP,the good thing about it is XP default drivers work great so it`s plug and play with XP,don`t know if it`s still on the market.

Unfortunately, I think this is one of those areas where you get what you paid for. I've used modems in two systems recently. I tried cheapie FAR ones from OMax (IO and Hi Val) and neither one of them did squat w/XPSP1. An inexpensive US Robotics did the trick though, for $20.

OMG, just read the freaking HCL. Scroll down to the part that says "Modem/Analog." Buy one of the models that says "compatible" or "WLP" after its listing. I'd take MS's word over 10-second anecdotal reviews by other users. Oy.

EDIT: Also, $45 for a modem? Good god. You can buy a PCT1789 for $8.00 at GoGoCity. XP compatible (though it's not on the HCL list, but the company guarantees it).

I'm using a good old USRobotics "gaming" PCI hardware modem with no problems. It was one of the best when I bought it a couple years ago.

I had alot of probs too. I found for 56k, the best modem on this box was a Creative Modem Blaster USB....

Then I got DSL. 😀😀😀😀

i have a zoom v.92 modem... works great..

i have it lying around in my closet collecting dust now because i have dsl...

pm me if you're interested..

$10?

Good luck seeing a hardware modem now, I didn't even think anyone made a hardware pci modem.

I still have an old relic usr clone 33.6 isa modem collecting dust, i plugged it in maybe a year and a half ago, and it still had old settings stored 🙂

Of course, using cable now so a 10/100 nic is all I need.

I never heard of the "Hardware Compatibility List", not that it would had matter since both modems I own are on the list but somehow don't work well with WinXP. I own the following:

Zoom V.92 External Faxmodem - I connect well with this modem but for some reason when I start downloading anything it just stops. I'm not able to surf or even receive & send email. I never had this problem while using Win98se. I've been told on another forum that you sometimes have to lower the fifo settings for some external modems, unfortunately the "Advanced port settings" aren't available for this modem.

Hi-Val 56k Internal Model H5619-00R (Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem) - I can't even connect with this one. I got this one FAR from OfficeMax.

If they're on the list, I would tend to doubt that they're really the problem. It could be other hardware, incorrect settings, etc. Have you contacted your ISP about the problem?

That's odd you're having problems finding a compatable modem. I got bored a long time ago (pretty much when I first got my hands on WinXP Pro). I popped in a Compaq 56K modem that I had in my closet from a 1998 model Compaq Presario. Windows detected and installed the necessary drivers and worked.

they also offer a v92 softmodem for 14.99

I might buy this modem when I get my rebate check for the Hi-Val modem from OfficeMax.

I believe it's either incorrect settings (fifo settings) or the fact that both modem's WinXP drivers were unsigned.

Anyway. I finally made Senior Member at AnandTech! Ooo, behold my glorious title and author icon. Here's the post I replied to:

Maybe a little condescending, but the guy deserved it. I mean, gee-whiz, use Google before you bother ppl with questions. It's just common sense.

Maybe you're not aware of this but forums like anandtech exist so members can help each other out. We all can't be ubergeeks like you.

Sorry I bothered you hjo3.

Oops. Sorry. I've gotten so used to ppl not reading my blog, I barely think about what I put there. Obviously, use of the HCL didn't matter anyway in this case. Superficially, it seemed like an obvious answer, but it wasn't. My blog is a more... exxagerated version of my life. You didn't bother me.

With XP I find I can chuck just about any modem in there and it works just fine; Windows installs a generic driver for it and then it's away.
